| HOT WEATHER TIPS FOR RUNNERS! |
| Runner's World Magazine says if it is over 90 degrees outside, don't run outside! Good advice, unless you live in Kansas where that hot tempature is normal durring the summer. There are some things you can do to deal with the heat that might be helpful (other than treadmilling it indoors). ALWAYS - AND I REPEAT- ALWAYS HAVE COOL WATER AVAILABLE. You can do this by carrying a bottle with you in your hand, by buying a belt that fits around your waist and holds several small bottles, by buying a camelback bag that you fill and carry on your back, by planting icewater at periodic intervals along your planned route so you have watering holes to stop at, or by having water in your vehicle and running a loop such as Rice Park or Carey Park. I personally like Carey Park because at least half of the time you have some shade to run in. To replace minerals that you sweat out it is wise to drink a little Gatorade before, durring and after a long run. A word of caution, if you are very hot and sweaty after a run, do not chug down several cold beers immediately as the drop in blood pressure may make you lightheaded. Also try to run in the coolest part of the day that your schedule will allow, early morning or evening. DRESS FOR THE OCCASION! Wear light colors that reflect sunlight, buy running clothes that wick moisture away from your body, and wear as little clothing as modesty will allow. Also a sweatband and wristband will help prevent stinging salty sweat from getting into your eyes. Don't forget to put sunscreen (the sweatproof kind) on 20 minutes before running and wear some kind of hat to protect your head and face from the UV rays of the sun. Sunglasses will help protect you eyes from the UV rays too. If you are like me you would be wise to put vaseline on places where you are likely to chafe. AT THE END OF YOUR RUN be sure to cool down by walking in the shade if possible. Try to keep a sweat rag in your car for that lingering sweat that just won't stop until your car's air conditioning takes effect. Protect you seats with a seat shield (about $30 online), and have mercy on your passengers by keeping a little cologne or perfume (but not too much) available to splash on when your done. If that smell offends you more than sweaty bodies, skip it and just accept the fact that to be healty your have to exercise and are going smell like it- but remember it is the smell of success!---and above all KEEP RUNNING!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Why not join the Salt City Strider Running Club here in Hutchinson.
