| TRAINING FOR A FALL OR SPRING MARATHON OR HALF MARATHON? |
| -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Tis the season for long races! The Wichita Marathon and Marathon relay has added a half marathon and a 5K this year. Chicago Marathon set a new record in 2009. With New York marathon and Dallas and Oklahoma City races also coming up, and the spring Marthons like the Eisenhower marathon at Abeline not too far off, you may want to train to run one of these long races. Here are some tips.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Don't be in a hurry. Follow the runner's pyramid. Start out with slow long runs, gradually building your long run to 10 miles, doing one each week. When you get over 10 miles on your long runs, do them once every 2 weeks. Add speedwork and hill training only after your base milage buildup is complete.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Download a training schedule for your race. My favorite place to look for training schedules is Hal Higdon's website, if you don't know what his website is just check the links page on this website. Generally speaking, choose the training schedule that fits you whether it be beginner, intermediate or advanced. don't be tempted to take on an advanced schedule if your not qualified for it as overtraining is probable the biggest cause of injuries in runners.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Young runners (under 16 years of age) be careful not to overdue marathoning as some experts say it can injure your joints and prevent them from growing (unless you want to be 4' 1" the rest of your life), something about what they call the growth plates in your legs. Older runners (over 50 or so) should actually only run every other day to give their poor old bodies a chance to recover, whereas young people should run at least 4 or 5 days a week. Both should alternate hard or long runs with easy run days.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Choose your clothing wisely! Dress for the weather and layer your clothing in cold weather. Remember that if you are comfortable before a race in cold weather you probable need to leave one layer of clothing at the starting line as you will get hotter as you run. Many experienced runners wear old discarable sweats to the starting line, some wear garbage bags (be sure to cut out holes for your arms). I prefer to wear the plastic ponchos available everywhere for about a dollar apiece.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Most importantly, run for the joy of it and unless you are training for the Olympics don't overtrain or overstrain and run as if you are going to run for the rest of your life, because that should really be your numbere one goal! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why not join the Salt City Strider Running Club here in Hutchinson.
